Poem; This Smile Is For Tomorrow

THIS SMILE IS FOR TOMORROW

Jabez is the only true title I have earned for myself

And I am the result of two young deviants having pleasure

He donated a sperm and disappeared with the dates into history

Two babies having a baby

Who would believe I’m not an accident but myself and God

God and eraser

But I know God does not use erasers

Design and happenstance,

Happenstance is not the description nor definition of my God

So I have a smile preserved for tomorrow

I am Jabez crying, a Joseph in a pit with my mind on a palace

And so if you’ll bless me and enlarge my coast

If you will take away my old cloak and give me a new coat

Then I believe this smile is for tomorrow

See I don’t have much but stained love

Imperfect though but steady

Dear Lord so I give it to you

Can you use it?

I’ve got a will too

But it is left bound

I will it to you in absolute surrender

Is it worth anything?

I have nothing but a weary body with a stained soul and a grieved spirit

And my iniquity

Can they be of any use?

Then separate me from the many for the many

Obscurity and preparation

I am sure this smile is for tomorrow

Train my hands to fight and my fingers to war

I am a seed fast decaying in a ground

Buried and the dirt, believe me

But my green has come from my black

So if you see me smiling

Know that this smile is for tomorrow

I am that Christ

They said sorry and pushed me into the grave

But I grew up like a mighty tree

I am a seed so the belly of the soil is not my prison but my palace

Bearing through time the fruit of grace

I understand the race

But this my smile is for tomorrow

The valley has hidden me

And poverty has worked her art on my dignity

I hang in the gallery and no man will look twice

Hasn’t time been generous to all of us?

Some were born with golden spoons in their mouths

Others machete waiting for them

I dread the turn of the hinge

An announcement of another rejection

Why has the cloud and the sun formed allies to keep destiny in the dark?

Sorrow has made pale my tomorrow

But my clock is friendlier than my neighbour

Time tells truth

I am Joseph believe me

The pit gave me Potiphar

Potiphar gave me prison

But the prison gave me the palace

Only I wish I knew God has a pen

God does not use erasers

So if you see my weary eyes

And the strained smile

This smile is for tomorrow

And I promised my cry and my sorrow

I have not died yet,

I feel the hot breathe oosing out of my lungs

It is hope and fire

Pain has not overcome me yet

I still have my sanity and my smile

Building inside of me both faith and hope

Beating by life’s hospitality

But I still have my smile

And it is for tomorrow

In the peom, the writer talks about one societal problem, premature birth. If Jabez have not been born out of deadlock, maybe he wouldn’t have passed through all those hardships.

@Acheampon1 and he was also talking about mental toughness. Per the prom, Jabez was very strong mentally. Upon all the challenges he faced in life, he still did not give up.

The lesson I have learned from the poem is that, so far as we live, there is hope
